What is the IWW?

The IWW is a member-run union for all workers, a union dedicated to organizing on the job, in our industries and in our communities. We want our workplaces run for the benefit of workers rather than for a handful of bosses and executives.  We organize to fix day to day issues on the job, but also think that the bigger picture needs to change. We work to build a society where we not only have direct control over our jobs, but also over our lives, our communities, and cities.

How does it work?

The IWW organizes all workers producing the same goods or providing the same services into one union, rather than dividing workers by skill or trade, so we can pool our strength to win our demands together. Since the IWW was founded in 1905, we have made significant contributions to the labor struggles around the world and have a proud tradition of organizing across gender, ethnic and racial lines long before such organizing was popular.

How are people fighting back in Miami?

“Working in a hospital, we’re pushed to the limit everyday. Patients are suffering, and management just keeps cutting back. We were having trouble with a new rule at work that was forcing us to work overtime without pay. I got my coworkers together and we organized to refuse to work in that way, and they stopped enforcing the rule. I’m an IWW because I see that when we’re organized we can fix these problems. Life doesn’t have to be this way, we could run it better ourselves”.  –Scott

“I work at a hotel as a pool and beach attendant. As the hotel industry booms in South Florida, the present day working conditions continue to be a living nightmare for us workers. At most properties, wages are low, labor is back breaking, and workers are susceptible to all kinds of injuries. All we ask for are better working conditions and pay that equals to the kind of labor we produce. I joined the IWW because it’s a union that seeks true workplace democracy: workers’ self-management. You can’t get more egalitarian than that!” -Matías

”I work in a printing house that employs dozens of people yet none of us receive any sort of benefits. Wage theft is nothing new and management is continuously coming up with new rules to cut into our pay while making us work more. Organizing is not only a way to fight back for what is ours but it is also a way to build solidarity among the people that we see everyday. It’s a way to build relationships so we can be stronger together.”

“I am a college student working at a corporate coffee store because despite scholarships from the state and my university, college education is so expensive that I need to work to support myself and not put even more financial burden on my working parents. Hours at work are always scarce, or sometimes too much for a full-time student. I work long nights too, having to wake up early to go to school the next day. By organizing my coworkers we could write our own balanced schedule that works for everyone. I am an IWW because I imagine a future where freedom and equality are paramount; where students and workers can maximize their personal and collective potential free from exploitation.”  -James

How to Join?

We invite you to join the IWW whether there is a union at your job or not. We organize the worker, not the job, and recognize that unions are not about government certification or employer recognition but about workers coming together to address common concerns. Sometimes this means refusing to work with dangerous equipment and chemicals. Sometimes it means striking or signing a contract. Other times it mean agitating around particular issues or grievances in a workplace or industry.

The IWW is a democratic, member-run union. That means members decide what issues to address, and which tactics to use and we directly vote on office holders, from stewards to national offices.

It was written over 100 years old ago, so it’s important to be able to put it in 21st century context and language. Tim Acott, an IWW member from Portland, Oregon, wrote this commentary which puts in everyday terms and goes into more detail about our vision and values. Our constitution is public and available for all members.

Qué es el IWW?

El IWW es un sindicato para todos los trabajadores, y es gestionado por sus propios miembros. Se dedica a la organización en nuestros trabajos, industrias, y comunidades. Queremos que nuestros lugares de trabajo se manejen a beneficio del trabajador y no a beneficio de los jefes y gerentes. Nos organizamos para resolver conflictos que enfrentamos en el día a día en el trabajo, pero también creemos que el panorama tiene que cambiar. Trabajamos para construir una sociedad en la que no sólo tenemos control directo sobre nuestro trabajo, sino también sobre nuestras vidas, nuestra comunidades, y nuestras ciudades.

Cómo funciona el IWW?

El IWW organiza todos los trabajadores que producen los mismos bienes o que prestan los mismos servicios, en un solo sindicato, en lugar de organizarlos por arte u oficio. La idea es que podamos unir nuestras fuerzas para ganar demandas juntos. Desde que el IWW fué fundado en 1905, hemos hecho importantes contribuciones a las luchas obreras en todo el mundo y además tenemos una orgullosa tradición de haber organizado trabajadores de todos los géneros, étnias y razas mucho antes de que estas luchas se hayan considerado con seriedad.

Cómo estamos luchando en Miami?

“Como enfermero en un hospital, los trabajadores nos sentimos empujados hasta el límite todos los días. Mientras que los pacientes sufren, los gerentes siguen haciendo recortes siguiendo su régimen de austeridad. Hace poco, estábamos teniendo problemas con una nueva regla que nos obligaba a trabajar horas extras sin paga. Reuní a mis compañeros de trabajo y nos organizamos para reusarnos a trabajar de esa manera. Así logramos que dejen de hacernos cumplir con esa regla. Soy un IWW porque veo que cuando nos organizamos podemos solucionar estos problemas. La vida no tiene por qué ser así, podríamos manejar las cosas mejor nosotros mismos.”  -Scott

“Trabajo en un hotel como camarero de la piscina y la playa. Aunque la industria de hotelería este creciendo en el sur de la Florida, las condiciones laborales siguen siendo una pesadilla para los trabajadores. En la mayoría de las propiedades, los salarios son bajos, el trabajo es agotador, y los trabajadores son susceptibles a todo tipo de lesiones. Todo lo que pedimos son mejores condiciones de trabajo y una paga que equivalga a la cantidad de trabajo que hacemos. Me uní a la IWW, porque es un sindicato que busca una democracia real en el trabajo: la autogestión de los trabajadores. No hay algo mas igualitario que eso! ” –Matías

“Trabajo en una imprenta que emplea a decenas de personas pero ninguno de nosotros recibe ningún tipo de beneficios. El robo de salarios no es nada nuevo y mi jefa continuamente inventa reglas nuevas para cortar nuestro salario mientras nos hace trabajar cada vez más. La organización no sólo es una manera de luchar por lo que es nuestro, pero también es una manera de fomentar la solidaridad entre las personas que vemos todos los días. Es una manera de construir relaciones valiosas para que podamos ser más fuertes juntos “.  –Mónica

“Soy un estudiante universitario que trabaja en una cafeteria de una corporación famosa porque a pesar de que recibo becas del Estado y de mi universidad, la educación universitaria es tan cara que tengo que trabajar para mantenerme a mí mismo y no acumular mas deudas para mis padres. Las horas de trabajo son escasas, o, a veces demasiadas para un estudiante de tiempo completo. También trabajo noches largas, teniéndome que levantar temprano para ir a la escuela el día siguiente. Si nos

organizamos en mi trabajo podríamos armar nuestro propio horario que pueda funcionar para todos. Soy un IWW porque me imagino un futuro donde la libertad y la igualdad son de suma importancia, y donde los estudiantes y trabajadores puedan maximizar su potencial personal y colectivo, libre de explotación.”  -James

Cómo unirse?

Le invitamos a hacerse miembro del IWW aunque exista un sindicato en su trabajo o no. El IWW organiza y desarrolla el trabajador, no el lugar de trabajo. Proclamamos que el sindicato no necesita lidiar con la burocracia gubernamental, ni tampoco busca elogios de los jefes, sino que trata que los trabajadores se unan para resolver problemas que todos ellos tengan en común. Algunas veces esto significa reusarse a manejar maquinária peligrosa o trabajar con químicos. Otras veces significa hacer huelga o firmar un contrato. Otras veces se trata de hacer campaña sobre ciertos asuntos o reclamos en un lugar de trabajo o en una industria. El IWW es un sindicato democrático manejado por los miembros del mismo. Eso quiere decir que los miembros deciden que temas asumir, que estrategias usar, y también votan quiénes asumen cargos administrativos, ya sean cargos de delegados o cargos nacionales.
